Conservation & Tourism in Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam

A Unique Field Experience: January 4-16

Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve in southern Vietnam encompasses the jungles and wetlands of Cat Tien National Park, the secondary forests and war relics of the Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve, and small farming communities.  This course will connect you on bike and foot through this fascinating landscape to learn about pressing conservation issues, American War history and current life styles. This is an intellectually challenging, authentic look at Vietnam’s conservation crisis. We will learn from the local scientists and other professionals who are devoting themselves to saving habitats and wildlife in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

We hope to expand your perspectives on global conservation issues.  Can tourism ever benefit conservation efforts, and if so, under what circumstances? What cultural and economic factors influence the global illegal wildlife trade? What solutions are helping, and what others are on the horizon? Explore these topics on a level not available to casual tourists.

The course begins and ends in Ho Chi Minh City, with an optional 4 day extension to Con Dao Islands National Park.
